Justin Bieber’s Met Gala Look Praised By Anna Wintour As One Of Her ‘Favorites’
Justin Bieber’s stunning black and gold-embellished ensemble at Monday’s Met Gala was one of Anna Wintour’s “favorites” at the high octane New York City affair.
The Vogue editor-in-chief gave her appraisal of Bieber and a few of the stars who went to fashion’s social event of the year on Monday, during her appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers on Wednesday.
Meyers held up a shot of Bieber rocking the red carpet in a custom, black Balmain blazer with embroidered gold dragons, skinny black pants, an asymmetric, collarless black shirt, silk cummaband, boots, and sunglasses, before quipping, “We have Bieber… I see here, he shaved off his mustard ‘stache and he actually — he looks very good!”
Wintour agreed, while gently reproving Meyers’ mocking of the heartthrob. “Now, come on Seth. “This [Bieber’s outfit] was actually one of my favorites.”
Explaining the Biebs’ look at the star-studded Costume Institute event, which she themed “Chinese white tie,” the fashion maven complemented the Canadian singer’s blazer.
“These are all Chinese dragons,” Wintour told Meyers. “And apparently that’s aged gold bullion thread, as it should be.”
Asked for her opinion of Anne Hathaway’s Ralph Lauren-designed gold column, hooded dress, the editor praised the pair’s research. Wintour revealed they “based this dress on a modern Chinese artist, whose work features hip-hop artists and people wearing hoodies.”
Of NBA basketball player Dwayne Wade’s suited turn-out, Wintour was also impressed by Wade’s observance of the Gala’s theme, saying, “China is obviously his red sash and his imperial medals.”
Moving on to George Clooney and his wife Amal, the fashionista defended the actor when Meyer pointed out that he didn’t even wear a tie to the soiree.
“First of all, he has Ama on his arm, and he’s George Clooney,” Wintour countered light-heartedly. “He doesn’t have to wear anything.” To which, Meyers joked back, “That’s just a freebie.”
Wintour was praised outspoken rapper-designer Kanye West, who escorted his wife, Kim Kardashian-West to the Gala.
To Meyers, the Vogue grand-dame raved, “The wonderful thing about Kanye is he likes to talk, and basically likes to talk about anything, sort of like Karl Lagerfeld.”
Wintour added, “[Kanye’s] brilliant. I like to listen, so we have a very close relationship.”
Meyers’ laughter-filled reply? “It’s a perfect match.”
Wintour also name-checked Rihanna, whose meme-creating, Guo Pei-designed dress and train “took one Chinese person two years to make this dress. It’s a dress not to forget.”

Meanwhile, Bieber jetted back to the West Coast from NYC on Tuesday and went straight into the studio with “Where Are U Now” collaborator Skrillex.
The superstar — who has been hailed by Balmain’s creative director Olivier Rousteing as “the future” — is performing at KIIS FM’s Wango Tango in Los Angeles on Saturday, May 9. The Biebs tweeted a general invite to the all-day concert on Thursday.
