One Direction Fans Show The Ugly Side Of Fandom Again
One Direction fans have once again shown the dark side of boy-band obsession by trending an ugly hashtag on social media site twitter. One Direction have some of the most dedicated, obsessed, generous, and sometimes ugly fans in the business, and the ugly side has emerged again this week.
A recent report in Inquisitr highlighted how One Direction’s fans turned nasty with Melissa Whitelaw when it was first rumoured that she was dating Niall Horan. One Direction fans have been cruel threatening and abusive to a variety of people who they consider as having been disrespectful towards their idols.
Reality TV reports that once again things have taken an sinister turn as some One Direction fans have turned their anger to Little Mix star Perrie Edwards. Little Mix were interviewed on radio station Capital FM when they were asked to play a game based on the dating app Tinder. Edwards, who is engaged to be married to former One Direction star Zayn Malik, and her band-mates indicated that they did not think Harry Styles would be a good boyfriend.
According to Hollywood Life, the Little Mix girls like Harry but don’t think he is boyfriend material because he just gets far too much female attention. MTV reports that Leigh-Anne’s Pinnock reaction got Directioners riled up, as she answered “no” before adding: “I’m going to take Taylor [Swift’s] advice and go left.”
As a result some One Direction fans showed their annoyance by trending the hashtag #DirectionersWantPerrieDead on Twitter. It seems some One Direction fans blame Perrie for Malik’s exit from the band intimating that Perrie’s “frosty” attitude to Harry Styles was responsible for his quitting the band.
DEAR LITTLE MIX, I WOULD LOVE TO INSULT YOU BUT I AM AFRAID I WONT DO IT AS WELL AS NATURE DID.#DirectionersWantPerrieDead

Of course, this latest example of the negative side of One Direction “Fandom” is far from an isolated occurrence. After Zayn Malik’s departure from One Direction a trend emerged on Twitter encouraging fans to self-harm as a response to his leaving. On that occasion the hashtag #CutForZayn trended while others made death and suicide threats.
Thankfully, many of One Direction’s fans are quick to highlight these trends and distance themselves from them. Inquisitr has reported on many occasions about the positive side of One Direction “fandom,” highlighting the remarkable efforts that many fans make in raising money for charities supported by One Direction band members. A recent effort by One Direction’s Liam Payne has more than doubled its initial $100,000 target thanks to fans and supporters.
Unreality TV sums up the situation well saying that “unfortunately, it’s the ongoing nasty actions of the minority of Directioners who give the entire fandom such a bad name, and we can attest that within the industry, One Direction fans are rarely spoken about with any affection.”
