NXT’s last live special was Takeover: Rival back in February and it was one of the best wrestling shows of the year. Kevin Owens made a huge impact and took down Sami Zayn to capture the NXT Championship, and fans can’t wait for the next event. Let’s take a look at the rumored card and also figure out if Samoa Joe is ready to make the move into WWE.
One of the biggest rumors right now is that Samoa Joe may be ever closer to signing with WWE. PW Insider is reporting that Joe was backstage at the NXT tapings on Thursday night and was to meet with Triple H about possibly signing with the company.
Jim Ross was also backstage at the NXT tapings to do some voiceover work.
Great seeing my friend @SamoaJoe today in Orlando. Joe’s on the #RossReport podcast in 2 weeks, Tues May 5. #BEAST

This is huge and could possibly lead to Samoa Joe debuting at the NXT Takeover live special on May 20, if a deal is made, of course.
On Thursday, NXT taped three weeks worth of shows and there was a lot of big-time stuff that went down, per WrestleZone . After all of those events at the tapings, one match is already confirmed for NXT Takeover and it is the main event.
Sami Zayn will finally get his rematch against Kevin Owens for the NXT Championship. This is the only match confirmed, but there were many others hinted at during the tapings and will likely be officially announced over the coming weeks.
Here is how the card is shaping up so far.
Confirmed
- NXT Championship – Kevin Owens (c) vs. Zami Zayn
Rumored
- NXT Women’s Championship – Sasha Banks (c) vs. Becky Lynch
- NXT Tag Team Championship – Blake & Murphy (c) vs. Big Cass & Enzo Amore
- Rhyno vs. Baron Corbin
- Hideo Itami vs. Tyler Breeze vs. Finn Balor
- Emma vs. Bayley
These matches may or may not be confirmed, and there are also plenty that could be added before the live show in May. There’s still a month to go until the event on May 20 so anything could happen.
Now, if the talks between Samoa Joe and Triple H went well on Thursday night, then the Takeover special could be much bigger than anyone is imagining. A rematch between Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn is already huge, but can you even imagine the crowd reaction if Samoa Joe comes out at the end?
