‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Shocker: Actor Exits The Show After Character’s Death (Spoiler)
Fans are still reeling from the shocking Grey’s Anatomy episode that saw Patrick Dempsey take his final bow as Dr. Derek Shepherd. If you missed it, in a shocking twist, after Derek saved a group of people from an otherwise devastating car accident, the brilliant neurosurgeon was hit by a semi truck.
Instead of being transferred to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, he was brought to a hospital with a staff that wasn’t trained in trauma, which meant the CT he so desperately needed, wasn’t performed, and by the time the neurosurgeon checked his brain, he was already left brain dead from his injuries. Star Patrick Dempsey sat down with Entertainment Weekly to talk about his shocking departure and his last day on the set of a show he spent 11 years on.
Commenting on the fact that he had just signed an extension contract with the show, Dempsey said, “It just sort of evolved. It’s just kind of happened. It really was something that was kind of surprising that unfolded, and it just naturally came to be. Which was pretty good. I like the way it has all played out.”
He continued, “Things happened very quickly, where we were like, ‘Oh this is where it’s going to go.’ It just sort of unfolded in a very organic way. I don’t remember the date. It was not in the fall. Maybe February or March. It happened very quickly.”
The only time Dempsey teared up during the interview is when EW brought up working with star Ellen Pompeo, the Meredith in the MerDer phenomena. “It was magic. It’s beautiful. We’re like a married couple. It’s 10 years, and it was magic from the beginning. Chemistry right away.”
As for his last day on set, Dempsey said it was like any other day. “I’m still processing it. This is part of the mourning process, the post Grey’s experience. It was like any other day… just another work day. There was still too much going on. You’re in the midst of it, not really processing it. You are always trying to be present. The workload and long hours…it’s best just to be dealing with that scene and that take, and try to bring as much truth to it as possible.”
As the Inquisitr reported fans were not happy about Derek’s sudden death, and throughout the first airing of the episode the term Grey’s Anatomy was the number one trend on Twitter, mostly due to the emotional fans. Here’s a taste.

You’d think being doctors and all, the Grey’s Anatomy people would figure out how to stop dying every other day or so.
