Mayim Bialik’s Father Dies: ‘Big Bang Theory’ Actress Aches For ‘My Abba’ In Poignant Post On Jewish Parenting Site
Mayim Bialik has revealed that her father died. Known for her acting skills on The Big Bang Theory, the actress crafted a blog that both honored him and mourned his passing. Barry Bialik died on the second to last day of Passover, reported People.
And in her blog on the Jewish parenting site Kveller, Mayim made it clear just how special her father, whom she called Abba ( (the Hebrew term for father), was in her eyes.
“For those of you who have lost a parent, you know how I feel. You tell me you do. For those of you who have lost someone else you were close to, you also tell me you know how I feel. But you don’t. Because you’re not me losing my Abba.”
The 39-year-old actress also revealed that Barry had been in hospice for weeks, but that even though she and her family had known the time of his passing was imminent, it still caused grief and pain.
“He had been in hospice for two months. We knew it was coming. We had months to process and love and grieve and rage at God and all of that,” reflected Mayim.
However, The Big Bang Theory actress also revealed in her post that she wanted to keep part of her mourning private.
“I appreciate condolences and care and love, but I am alone in the singularity of my loss. Jewish mourning is profound and I am deep in it. I hope to be able to share more soon. For now, I am praying a lot. And remembering a lot. And crying. And also laughing.”
In closing, Bialik offered a simple quote.
“Because to every thing, there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven,” she wrote.
Mayim’s comment about “Jewish mourning” refers to the Jewish tradition of a seven-day Shivah, according to the Daily Mail.
Those seven days require family members to obey specific guidelines while mourning. In addition, the Jewish tradition deems a child whose parent has passed away to remain in mourning for a year.
The Kveller Web site also explains Shiva.
“Shiva is the week long period of mourning following a loved one’s death. During this time, family members traditionally gather in one home to receive visitors. The word ‘shiva’ means seven, signifying the seven day mourning period in which mourners are supposed to sit low to the ground.”
Mayim’s post about her father recalls the words of Melissa Rivers in mourning the death of her mother Joan Rivers, as the Inquisitr reported.
“It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers,” said Melissa.
Melissa then wrote a eulogy to her mother.
“I know you are a true creative genius (and I am in awe of the depth of your instincts)….You are an inspiration.”
