First ball of the 50-overs-per-side One Day International match is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Bangladesh Standard Time on Sunday — so cricket fans in the United States will need to take a nap the night before, because that means the game starts at 4:30 a.m. Eastern Time, 1:30 a.m. Pacific.
On Friday, Bangladesh bowled out the visitors from Pakistan in 45.2 overs, on their way to a resounding 79-run victory — the first win by Bangladesh in any cricket format over their subcontinent rivals since a World Cup ODI in 1999, and only the second time in the 48 matches played between the two nations that the Tigers came away with a win.
A stand of 132 off of 135 balls by opener Tamim Iqbal led the way for Bangladesh, the 26-year-old Tamim’s fifth century of his ODI career.
Mushfiqur Rahim also posted a ton, with 106 from just 77, and when the two star batsmen were in partnership, they produced 178 — which shifted the momentum in the match clearly to the Bangladesh side after a trio of Pakistan left-arm quicks kept Bangladesh restricted through the early going.
The final Bangladesh total of 329, with six wickets down, was a higher target than Pakistan had ever overcome in an ODI and in the end, they weren’t up to the task, despite a 50 from new captain Azhar Ali — who became only the fifth Pakistani ODI captain to reach that mark in his first game at the helm.
On Sunday, Pakistan will attempt to regroup and even the series, setting up a decider in the ODI finale Wednesday.
Following the ODI series, the Pakistan tour continues two days later with a single T20 match, followed by two Bangladesh vs. Pakistan test matches, starting May 2 and May 10.
