Pippa Middleton has landed herself in hot water with conservation groups after bragging about gorging on smoked whale meat on a recent trip to Norway.
The Daily Mail reports that Pippa has been slammed for her cruel and carnivore manner and for “promoting the cruel and unnecessary whaling industry.”
The vicious eating habits of Kate Middleton’s sister were unearthed after Ms. Middleton wrote about eating whale as if it was no more unusual than settling down for the night with a KFC bucket and two liter bottle of Coke.
“We dined on smoked whale carpaccio (which tastes similar to smoked salmon but looks more like venison carpaccio).”
Pippa then enlightened readers of the Telegraph further by explaining she ate the dish at the £123-a-night Juvet Landscape Hotel – an “architectural gem” on Norway’s River Valdolla.
The 31-year-old socialite added that the flesh of the slaughtered whale was cooked by Knut, the hotel’s owner, and the meat of the deceased sea beast was “served on a large communal table in the cowshed, creating a wonderfully convivial atmosphere.”
Like many rich people, Pippa seems to be from the school of, ‘If it moves eat it’ when it comes to table etiquette, but this probably won’t sit well with her brother-in-law, Prince William.
Although he likes to hunt and kill poor defenseless animals and birds as much as the next man, Prince William has been very vocal of late about poaching and wildlife crime. Most notably, he has a particular affinity for elephants.
Although his father Charles, is the Prince of Wales, Prince William’s thoughts on whales is not really known, but no doubt like most, the future King of England would find the thought of eating one hard to stomach.
Pippa’s bravado about consuming whale meat has not gone unnoticed by Whale And Dolphin Conservation (WDC), who called her actions ‘very disappointing’ and suggested rather than eat them, she could have gone on a whale watching trip instead.
“This is really disappointing news, particularly as Pippa is so high-profile, and given how active her brother-in-law, William, is on speaking out against poaching and wildlife crime.
“Commercial whale hunting is banned, the UK government backs the ban and for good reason. Killing whales is cruel, there is no humane way to kill them and many are slaughtered using brutal harpoon grenades.”
“Last season, 731 minke whales suffered an agonising death at the hand of Norwegian whalers. It might have been better for Pippa to take a whale watch trip in Norway. She might then have thought twice about condoning and indeed, promoting, this cruel and unnecessary trade.”
Pippa was also blasted by Siri Martinsen, the head of Norwegian animal rights group NOAH. He explained to the local.no that Pippa had not given a thought to what she was actually condoning.
“Being a well-known celebrity, she has special responsibility to make sure she doesn’t support animal cruelty, so it’s a bit sad that she hasn’t taken the animal welfare consequences into consideration.”
