The Red Sox won the first two games, starting with a historic but grueling 19-inning marathon — a game that started at 7:05 p.m. on Friday but did not wind up until about 2:13 a.m. on Saturday morning.
The game also had a delay when the lights went out in Yankee Stadium, making the official time of game six hours and 49 minutes. That made the game the longest ever played, in terms of time, by the Red Sox, a franchise that has existed since 1901.
The game broke the team mark set on August 25, 2001, when the Red Sox played an 18-inning game against the Texas Rangers in Arlington, Texas. But the Red Sox lost that six-hour, 35-minute game 8-7.
Friday’s 19-inning affair had the second-most innings played in any game that Boston ever won.
The Red Sox won again on Saturday, but within the regulation nine this time, as the Yankees made a series of defensive miscues that opened the floodgates for Boston to plate eight runs in what turned out to be an 8-4 decision.
Sunday night’s game, starting at 8 p.m., features a mound duel between the team’s top starting pitchers. Boston’s Clay Buchholz opened the season last Monday with a masterful, seven-inning, three-hit shutout performance against the Philadelphia Phillies.
For the Yankees, Masahiro Tanaka continues to pitch with a torn ligament in his right arm — and it showed on Opening Day when he was chased from the game after just four innings by the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Yankees hope Tanaka can pitch through the injury more effectively this time, allowing the Bronx Bombers to stave off the sweep by their arch-rivals to the northeast. The rivalry then resumes on May 1, when the Yankees land in Boston for three games at Fenway Park.
