Francis Bean Cobain Talks Life After Kurt, Says She Prefers Oasis To Nirvana
Frances Bean Cobain, daughter of Kurt Cobain, recently sat down with Rolling Stone and discussed what life was like after her father’s passing, a recent documentary she produced about her father, and her relationship with her mother, Courtney Love. Interestingly, the interview marks the first time the 22-year-old has opened up about the death of her father.
“Kurt got to the point where he eventually had to sacrifice every bit of who he was to his art, because the world demanded it of him,” she said in the interview. “I think that was one of the main triggers as to why he felt he didn’t want to be here and everyone would be happier without him.”
Cobain, who is the executive producer of the upcoming HBO documentary Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, also discussed making the film.
“It’s the closest thing to having Kurt tell his own story in his own words — by his own aesthetic, his own perception of the world. It paints a portrait of a man attempting to cope with being a human,” she explained.
Being the daughter of Kurt Cobain, Frances Bean Cobain also revealed that it was impossible to live without constantly being reminded of the grunge rock icon. With that said, she revealed that Nirvana wasn’t really her type of music via the Huffington Post.
“I don’t really like Nirvana that much [grins]. Sorry, promotional people, Universal. I’m more into Mercury Rev, Oasis, Brian Jonestown Massacre [laughs]. The grunge scene is not what I’m interested in.”
In working on the documentary about her late father, Cobain also said the film helped her with her relationship with her mother.
After Love watched an emotional scene in the documentary where Cobain is holding Frances as a baby, she said, “My mother held me, cried on me and just said, ‘I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry.’ Just kept saying it over and over. But then she said, ‘Do you realize how much your father loved you?’ And I said, ‘Yeah, I do.'”
Cobain is currently working on a career as a visual artist, and she expressed a desire to move on and create something great.
“Oddly enough, being 22, it’s the first year a fire has been lit under my ass – not because of the documentary, just personally. I have this motivation and ambition that I didn’t have before.”
