‘Shameless’ Season 6 Spoilers: Ian And Mickey’s Relationship Troubles And Debbie’s Pregnancy Test
Oh, Shameless. Considering how crazy any given episode of this show can get, it seems like sometimes, the Showtime series can’t do anything that’s surprising anymore. Then, a season finale rolls around, and it ends with one character chasing another and shooting at him (and the police following them) and another taking a pregnancy test and seemingly having a reaction of regret. Oh, and of course, there’s a breakup in the middle of all that madness, one person falling in love with his professor and another stuck between her husband and her boss.
As the Inquisitr previously reported, Ian and Mickey’s relationship was in a good place at the beginning of the season – other than Ian’s infidelity. They had their ups and downs (mostly downs) throughout Shameless Season 5, but Mickey stood by Ian through his bipolar diagnosis. However, after spending some time with Monica (which is pretty much always a bad decision), Ian returned home, but it wasn’t for a happy reunion with Mickey. While Mickey told him he loved him, which means they take care of one another, Ian argued that they saw things very differently when it came to his disorder and medication.
“Too much is wrong with me,” Ian said. “You can’t fix me because I’m not broken. I don’t need to be fixed. I’m me.”
And so Ian and Mickey seemingly broke up – but then Sammi reentered the picture, after Mickey and Debbie thought they shipped her dead body off, and she had a gun. She started shooting at Mickey who ran off, and the police followed.
So what does this all mean for Ian and Mickey’s future? Do they even have one? Showrunner and executive producer John Wells told The Hollywood Reporter that that really seems to all depend on Noel Fisher and his availability.
“He was going to do a movie and wasn’t prepared to sign on for another year, so I have to check back in with him in a few months and see. He has a very thriving film career, and we really just hired him for a few episodes when we started, but we keep expanding it, and he always comes back when he’s available. So, some of where the characters end up will be dictated by availability, but it [also] may be an interesting time for Ian to discover how important Mickey was in his life. It’s that thing that often happens when you’re younger: you have a relationship that’s really difficult and passionate and messy, and then you go away from it and you discover the rest of the world, and sometimes you come back to that first person anyway.”
Elsewhere in the Shameless Season 5 finale, Debbie declared that she was pregnant – and she wanted to be pregnant, which, Wells, explained, is all part of her trying to “figure out what is normal.”
“She doesn’t have any idea. She’s got other adults in her life, like her sister Fiona, trying to tell her what that means = but Fiona doesn’t really know what it is, either. It’s really easy for Debbie to look at Fiona and say, ‘Oh yeah? You’re the one who’s supposed to tell me what happiness looks like and how you’re supposed to act as an adult?’ What really defines Debbie is some desire to find stability. It’s about those horrible conversations we have with teenagers all of the time. But particularly in this circumstance, it’s heightened. There’s been a lot of teenage posturing on her part, but a child takes teenage posturing and puts it in a completely different place, so that’s definitely something we’ll want to explore this next year.”
On the one hand, it’s easy to understand why Debbie would want out of her family and in with her boyfriend’s seemingly much better one, but this is not the way to go about getting away from the craziness of being a Gallagher. One of the final scenes of the Shameless season finale saw her taking a pregnancy test and first appearing happy with the results, implying that Debbie is pregnant, and then maybe realizing just what that would mean. For now, all Wells would confirm is that that’s what they wanted to show with that scene, but they’re still figuring out what they’ll be doing next.
Meanwhile, USA Today posted five questions that need to be answered after the Shameless season 5 finale, and one of them is about Liam getting his own storyline (other than that time he accidentally took cocaine).
“As Liam grows, we hope the show acknowledges him as a true Gallagher family member and allows him to get into some more trouble – just like his older brothers and sisters,” USA Today explained.
Since he is a Gallagher and he lives in that house amidst all the craziness – and he managed to get into Fiona’s cocaine that time – it doesn’t seem likely he’ll escape the craziness that is being part of this family.
