The incarnation of Hawkgirl that Renee will be playing goes by the name of Kendra Saunders.
The character of Hawkgirl has a very rich history in comic book lore. In the comics, Kendra Saunders committed suicide. As her soul was leaving her body, the soul of a previous Hawkgirl, Shiera Sanders, took over her body.
We do not know yet if the Hawkgirl character will be portrayed as she was in the comics, however, the CW Network has done an incredible job of keeping the characters we see on television very close to the comic book counterparts.
MoviePilot.com shows the casting call that went out for Hawkgirl. It is easy to see why Renee was selected for the role.
“FEMALE WARRIOR” | This twentysomething Latina is pretty but unassuming, book smart and socially awkward by day. But by night, when she hears the cry of battle, her fury is ignited and she becomes a fierce warrior — so much so, that sometimes she can become a threat to others.
Renee was quickly becoming one of the go-see actresses on Broadway. During the past year, Renee appeared in both Big Fish and Pippin. In a review of Pippin , written by Andrew Tomlins , he talks about her performance.
I’ve never seen anybody own a stage so effortlessly. Her vocal tone is to die for, but it was the power of the emotion in Renée’s eyes which really cast a spell over the audience. She storms the stage as if she has been performing on Broadway for years.
Renee’s ability to convey such power and emotion will create an amazing base for Hawkgirl to molded out of.
In a comic book universe, where men dominate, it is refreshing to see that television producers are not afraid to include powerful women.
Television characters are only as good as the people who play them. Ciara Renee is the perfect choice for this iconic superhero.
