Stephen Colbert suspended “The Colbert Report” last week for a few days for “unspecified reasons.” Colbert addressed his recent absence on his show last night.
Colbert said that there had been plenty of rumors about his absence. Some people thought that the show was cancelled because he said the Pope’s hat looked like a fancy condom. Joan Rivers said that he took a break from the show because he was having plastic surgery. And others said that the show was shut down by the FCC because Colbert was going to announce his run for the presidency. (Not going to happen.)
In a statement released last week, Comedy Central said :
“Due to unforeseen circumstances, the show will air repeat episodes on Wednesday, February 15 and Thursday, February 16…. (We are not) providing any additional details at this time.”
It was reported later in the week that Colbert had joined the rest of his siblings to aid their ailing mother . Colbert didn’t exactly confirm the reason for his absence, but he did give a subtle and confidential shout-out to his mother.
Colbert said:
“Oh, one more thing. Evidently having 11 children makes you tough as nails. Confidential to a lovely lady (points at the camera.)
Here’s the clip from “The Colbert Report.”
How do you think Stephen Colbert handled his mother’s illness? Do you think it was unprofessional to cancel his show? Do you have more respect for Colbert since he put his family ahead of his career for a few days?
