Jim Irsay: Colts Wants Peyton Manning Back but Has Some Conditions [Video]
Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay has upped the ante for Peyton Manning. He told Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star that he very much wants the all-star quarterback back on the team for 2012 and beyond, but he expects that the deal with have to attach some conditions in order for it to happen.
Peyton Manning signed a 5 year, $90 million dollar contract with the Colts last year. This is right before he had season ending neck surgery to repair a damaged nerve in his neck. There is a lot of speculation as to whether Manning will be able to come back to form if he does come back at all.
The Colts will owe manning a $28 Million roster bonus in March if they do not break ties with him. Further complicating the deal is the Colts first round draft pick where they are expecting to draft #1 quarterback Andrew Luck.
Irsay told the Star,
“We can make it work if he wants to be here. We’d be excited to have him back and finish his career with us. I want him to be able to make the choice. We would love to have him back here if he can get healthy and we can look at doing a contract that reflects the uncertainty of the … healing process with the regeneration of the nerve.”
Basically what he is saying is that he would want Manning to break his contract and become a free agent and sign a contract that is much more incentive based to give the Colts flexibility if his next doesn’t heal or he doesn’t regain the form he once had.
While it is an accepted fact that Peyton Manning loves Indianapolis, it remains to be seen if he will tolerate this kind of deal.
Do you think Peyton Manning should be more flexible with his contract or demand what is owed to him?
