Hilary Duff Talks Secrets, Hookups, And Maintaining Her Reputation As A Teen Star

Hilary Duff has always had a girl next door reputation, and she has maintained it throughout the years with ease, or so it would seem.

Hilary Duff, 27, has been putting herself out there more frequently now that she is reviving her music career and divorcing husband Mike Comrie after just over a year of separation. She recently talked to Cosmopolitan about not only her divorce, but also about her past, which included quite a few secrets, an interesting hookup and how she managed to keep her good girl reputation while some of her fellow Hollywood starlets seemed to fall off the deep end.

So what was Hilary’s method to avoid all the madness of living a very public Hollywood life? Well, first of all, the former Lizzie McGuire star admit that at the age of 19, she did a “massive friend cleanse” according to E! News.

“At 19, I did a massive friend cleanse. That was really hard, to sit down with people and say, ‘We can’t be friends anymore.’ They were like, ‘That’s f**ked up. You’re a bi**h.’ But having a good reputation was important to me.”

Hilary admit that the friend cleanse did her a lot of good at that time in her life, but she also admit to seeing a therapist every now and again. She says that a little tune-up does her good and she has learned that being in touch with what “feels good and what doesn’t” is a lesson that she has since learned and has helped keep her on the right path in her life.

While having a good reputation in her late teens and leading into her adult life was something Hilary found very important to her, that didn’t mean that she was a good little girl in her private life growing up.

According to US Weekly, Hilary admit that she believes it’s okay to have a little secret every now and then. She also hinted at the fact that she may have had her very own friend with benefits before her friend cleanse and before settling down!

“I’ve enjoyed myself. I think everyone should have something where you know it’s not exactly what you’re looking for but you just have a wicked good time. That was freeing for me and a bit of an awakening. It’s fun to have a secret.”

That being said, fans began fixating on when Hilary lost her virginity, and while she may not have named names, she did reference the fact that she had a much older boyfriend that she had been seeing between the ages of 16 and 19, that being Joel Madden.

“I had a 26-year-old boyfriend. So everyone can make their own assumptions about what I was doing.”
