This is the first time Disney has confirmed that there’s going to be a Frozen sequel, but certainly not the only sign that they were cooking something up for fans. Frozen star Idina Menzel let the cat out of the bag back in November that there was going to be a Frozen 2.
Although the Broadway actress was vague, she kept hope alive for the fans. She spoke about her involvement in the Frozen franchise, which includes an upcoming Broadway show and the sequel.
“Not the stage show — I don’t know what will happen with that — but the movie, hopefully. We’ll see. I’m just going along for the ride.”
Directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee hinted that there was more to come during a conversation with PopSugar a year ago.
“I think the characters are very rich, [and] I think there are other stories left to tell.”
It’s not a surprise that Disney is already starting production on the sequel to Frozen. As it stands right now, it’s the highest-grossing Disney-Pixar film of all time, pulling in over $1.3 billion worldwide.
In addition to the film, the Broadway show, and the theme park attraction, there’s also a Frozen short film called Frozen Fever that’s making its way into theaters with Cinderella.
Before Disney decided to make the official announcement about Frozen 2, a duet between the Frozen stars Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell was released. The song, titled “Making Today a Perfect Day,” is from the Frozen Fever short.
