‘Take Me To Church’ Cover Goes Viral
“Take Me To Church” has been a huge hit for Hozier, with the video making rounds on the web and earning praise for both the lyrics and the visuals. But it’s already getting a makeover of sorts by Ellie Goulding — who posted a cover of it on Soundcloud this week — and fans are sharing the song so that it spreads like wildfire.
Goulding has given the tune a bit of an electronic feel, but mostly keeps it simple, allowing her softly accented voice to shine through.
“It’s a departure from the original, but Goulding’s filigree voice sure does sound fine as a one-woman choir swirling over moody synthscapes,” writes Entertainment Weekly‘s Madison Vain.
“Take Me To Church” has been covered a few times already, and its popularity has led to its inclusion in the final competition episode of Glee. The episode will also feature performances of Roxette’s “Listen to Your Heart,” Starship’s “We Built This City,” Toni Basil’s “Mickey,” Hozier’s “Take Me to Church,” Sia’s “Chandelier” and Styx’s “Come Sail Away.”
Goulding made headlines last week when she earned praise from Adam Levine for her time on The Voice as a musical advisor. It’s not her first time on the series, as she performed on Season 5. She joins Lionel Richie, Nick Jonas, and Meghan Trainor for the new season and has already won over the coaches.
“Ellie was so great. She’s so human and easy to talk to. You could tell she had a profound impact on my team, which is awesome,” Levine said.
The “Take Me To Church” cover isn’t the first success for Goulding in recent weeks; in fact, she’s been leading over Hozier on the U.K. charts for several weeks now with her song “Love Me Like You Do,” from the Fifty Shades Of Grey soundtrack.
Goulding has been back at work after taking a bit of a break with her boyfriend, Dougie Poynter, whose band is currently touring with One Direction. Their relationship made some waves on the web due to Goulding’s former involvement with One Direction member Niall Horan, but Poynter said they can be adults about it.
“We’re all big enough and ugly enough to not really care. We all have exes, don’t we … It’s not a big deal, it’s not like it was a marriage,” Poynter said.
