Robin Thicke To Pay $1.77M, Pharrell Williams To Pay $1.6M To Marvin Gaye Estate

To a Gaye music fan, “Blurred Lines” was so obviously a tribute to “Got To Give It Up” that one might naturally believe that Thicke went through the proper channels to obtain the rights to the song itself. Imagine the surprise months later when Robin claimed that his song wasn’t ripping off Gaye’s song. Well, a jury has disagreed with Thicke and Pharrell, who’ve lost the “Blurred Lines” lawsuit, reports the Rolling Stone.

It wasn’t one song from Thicke that was inspired by Marvin’s music, but songs like “Love After War,” that reportedly sampled Gaye’s “After the Dance.” During a segment of the TMZ TV show, they compared Robin’s song, titled “Million Dollar Baby” from 2009, and found it amazingly similar to Marvin’s haunting and wonderful “Trouble Man” from the early 1970s, as reported by Showbiz411.

What became infuriating to many Thicke fans — those same ones who loved witnessing Robin’s once-wonderful marriage to Paula Patton and her appearance in her husband’s videos like “Lost Without U” — was that Robin wholeheartedly denied that his songs sounded anything like the classic Gaye songs, all the while professing his love for R&B and soul singers like Marvin.

As reported by the Inquisitr, Paula recently spoke about her breakup from Robin being a very challenging time, but stated that she practiced putting on a happy face and smiling even through hard times — and keeping a positive and hopeful outlook for the future.

While the Gaye estate was awarded $7.4 million in damages, Thicke and Pharrell won’t have to pay that entire amount, reports ABC News. The breakdown of the amount awarded will leave Pharrell paying approximately $1.6 million and Robin coughing up about $1.77 million for his share. It was Marvin’s daughter, Nona Gaye, who was really overcome with emotion about the court victory, as displayed when she cried in court and talked about feeling a sense of freedom.

“Right now, I feel free. Free from… Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke’s chains and what they tried to keep on us and the lies that were told.”

Despite claims from Thicke that Gaye’s “Got to Give It Up” song was one of his favorites, and that he idolized the musical legend, Robin held to the notion that he didn’t borrow from the song.
