Viral Letter To Rude Restaurant Employee: Woman With Disability Writes Letter To Restaurant Employee After Being Mistreated
Brittany Adler, 24, suffers from a rare condition known as Dystonia. The debilitating condition restricts the use of her muscles, affecting her speech and motor skills. Unfortunately, many people aren’t exactly considerate of her condition. One restaurant visit in particular reportedly proved just how insensitive others can be toward disabled people.
Brittany recently visited a restaurant with a friend, only to be ignored and disregarded by a restaurant employee. The mistreatment and blatant disregard was so bad that they opted to leave the restaurant and dine elsewhere. However, Brittany refused to allow the disrespectful behavior to go unnoticed.
She bravely decided to write a letter to the disrespectful employee. Brittany offered a few facts about herself, putting a new spin on the concept of “judging a book by its cover.” She politely demanded respect and asked to be treated as an other patron regardless of her condition.
Here’s the letter she wrote to the restaurant employee.
“Hi, my name is Brittany Adler. I am 24 years old. I graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Exercise Science and Health Science. I plan on getting my Doctorate of Physical Therapy. I also happen to have Dystonia, a condition that affects my muscle tone and speech. Just because I have this disability doesn’t mean I should be disrespected. It is a good thing that I am a strong individual otherwise, I would have been devastated. With that being said, everyone, including people with disabilities, should be respected equally… even though it may be harder to understand them. You should never give up on people. Everyone has something to say!
Sincerely,
Brittany”
During a recent interview with APlus.com, Adler shared details about the restaurant’s reaction to her letter. The restaurant manager reportedly has a disabled daughter, so the heartfelt letter definitely struck a chord with him. Adler admitted that he was extremely apologetic. The employee who offended her also apologized for the rude behavior.
“They were extremely apologetic,” Adler said. “I can’t blame [the employee] for not being exposed to different types of people. I [just wanted to make] sure that they knew it’s not OK to ignore people for any reason.”
Now, the letter which was initially shared on Brittany’s Facebook group page titled “Brittany’s Message” has gone viral on a number of news outlets and social media networks. However, Adler’s purpose wasn’t to gain notoriety — she simply wanted to make a statement.
