Police are currently investigating the drowning of an American passenger at Disney’s private island in the Bahamas — Castaway Cay. The incident happened on Thursday afternoon, and a lot of details are not yet known about the situation.
Tribune 242 reported that shortly before 4 p.m. on Thursday is when the tragic happening took place. A 38-year-old man from New York, whose name has not yet been released, was a passenger aboard a Disney Cruise Line ship that was moored at the island. As of now, reports from police are that he is alleged to have drowned while swimming in the area.
Castaway Cay is Disney’s private island in the Bahamas that only has stops from the four ships in the Disney Cruise Line fleet. Other cruise ships are not allowed to dock there.
The report states that the man drowned while swimming in waters in the area of the island. There are lifeguards on duty at different locations, but an adult beach known as Serenity Bay has no guards. Signs caution visitors to swim at their own risk.
The Disney Cruise Line has already dealt with a number of situations in 2015, but none ended up being quite as serious as a drowning.
In early January, the Disney Magic was following the same route as Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas when they noticed a man had fallen overboard. Royal Caribbean did not notice the passenger was gone, and the Disney Magic ended up rescuing him and bringing him on board.
Later in January, the Disney Magic was involved in another rescue situation, but it was a bit different. Five Cuban nationals were seen floating on a makeshift boat made out of metal barrels, and they brought them on board until the Coast Guard picked them up.
For now, there is not a lot known about the drowning of the man at Castaway Cay. Police have only revealed that he was indeed an American passenger on the Disney Cruise Line ship and he was 38-years of age.
An autopsy is scheduled to be performed on the man so that the exact cause of death can be determined. Police are currently stating that it was a drowning at Castaway Cay, and there has been no comment from Disney or Disney Cruise Line at this time.
