Rey Mysterio’s WWE status has remained in limbo for the last several months. Ringside News posted an update on his status within the last hour. They noticed that Mysterio’s WWE profile was put in the WWE Alumni section on their website. That usually means a WWE superstar is no longer with the company in some capacity.
Just a few minutes ago, Wrestlingnews.co received a statement regarding Rey Mysterio’s WWE status.
“Rey Mysterio is no longer under contract with WWE.”
In an earlier report by the Inquisitr , Rey Mysterio’s WWE status was questionable for quite a long time. His last true accomplishment in the WWE was his involvement in the first-ever Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal. Cesaro eliminated him in that match. Mysterio was also the No. 30 entrant in the 2014 Royal Rumble . His appearance in that Rumble is now infamous due to the WWE crowd wanting Daniel Bryan in that match instead.
Mysterio’s last match was against Bad News Barrett the night after WrestleMania 30 . Upon that loss, he decided to take time off to heal a wrist injury. Unfortunately, his relationship with WWE went downhill from there. During his time away from WWE, it was reported he wants to leave WWE, but then the WWE extended his contact without his permission.
Time then moved on and Mysterio expressed interest in AAA. He sent a video to AAA TripleMania and also visited Lucha Underground. Will another lucha wrestler in WWE ever replace Mysterio? As far as skills go, Mysterio is the greatest lucha wrestler in WWE history, if not all of pro-wrestling history.
Kalisto, former-NXT Tag-Team champion, made his debut on WWE’s main roster on their secondary show, Main Event. He and Sin Cara were one of the most-successful tag-team champions in NXT history. They defeated the Ascension for the tag-team belts at NXT Takeover: Fatal-Four-Way in September, 2014. Their reign was extremely impressive until losing to Blake and Murphy several weeks ago at an NXT taping.
Mysterio’s accomplishments will never be overlooked, and he is a future-WWE Hall of Fame wrestler. He is a two-time World Heavyweight champion, one-time WWE champion, three-time Cruiserweight champion, two-time Intercontinental champion, four-time WWE Tag-Team champion, and the 2006 Royal Rumble winner.
Not only that, but Mysterio paved the way for other lucha wrestlers in the WWE. Are things sour with Mysterio and the WWE right now? That’s not confirmed at this moment. However, like most former-WWE superstars, things will iron themselves out with time. Mysterio will appear on WWE TV one day in the future. So, for the children out there, keep your mask Mysterio gave you. It will come in handy one day.
