Lupita Nyong’o’s Oscars Dress Stolen
The gown worn by Academy Award winning actress Lupita Nyong’o at last Sunday’s Oscars was admired by more than just “Best Dressed” critics it seems, as it was snatched by a thief from Nyong’o’s hotel room Wednesday night.
The dress, designed by Francisco Costa as part of the Calvin Klein Collection and covered with more than 6,000 pearls, is estimated to be worth $150,000.
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, they received a call shortly before 11:30 last evening reporting the crime. Lupita’s pristine white gown had been in her hotel room at the London West Hollywood.
Detectives were still on the scene Thursday morning, reviewing security footage and trying to determine who might be to blame. It was not reported if any of Nyong’o’s other items were stolen or if other hotel guests experienced thefts.
Lupita Nyong’o had worn the gown to the 2015 Academy Awards while presenting the award for Best Supporting Actor. Nyong’o was the Best Actress Oscar winner in 2014 for her breakthrough performance in the film 12 Years a Slave.
Lupita’s sleek and sophisticated look in the elegant pearl gown on Sunday had earned her a top spot in the red carpet fashion reviews, including Glamour and Vogue.
While it hasn’t been determined if Nyong’o owns the dress or if it was on loan for the awards, it seems strange that a thief would choose such a high-profile piece of fashion as their target. In fact, the likelihood of the famous dress being stolen and sold almost sounds like a movie plot with Lupita Nyong’o as the unwilling star.
Thirty-one-year-old Nyong’o was born in Mexico and raised in Kenya. According to her IMDb page, she graduated from the Yale University School of Drama and is both an actress and director.
Lupita had only appeared in one short film and a miniseries before her role in 12 Years a Slave thrust her into the spotlight last year. Her Oscar win in 2014 and the buzz surrounding her brother’s hilarious photobomb of Ellen Degeneres’ epic Oscar selfie last year quickly made her a Hollywood darling.
Nyong’o is said to appear at the end of 2015 in Star Wars: The Force Awakens though the details of her role, like much of the details of the film, are hush hush.
Have no fear. The actress won’t have to worry about what to wear to that premiere.
Despite the theft of her dress today, the style and beauty she has exhibited at awards ceremonies thus far will undoubtedly garner Lupita offers from many designers for future red carpet events.
