Three Brooklyn men were arrested for allegedly attempting to fly to Syria and join ISIS . The FBI scooped up Abror Habibov, 30, Akhror Saidakhmetov , 19, and Abdurasul Hasanofvich Juraboev, 24, during raids earlier this afternoon.
FBI agents reportedly believe that the three Brooklyn attempting to join ISIS would have come back to New York City and attempted to pull off a terrorist attack. The federal law enforcement agency also reportedly noted that while the ISIS terrorism threat potentially posed by the Brooklyn men was “aspirational” and not “operational,” the intent to join the Islamic State was “real.”
Akhror Saidakhmetov is accused of posting a message on an Uzbek-language website stating he was planning to purchase a “machine gun and shoot police officers and FBI agents” if his goal of flying to Syria and joining ISIS failed.
Abdurasul Hasanofvich Juraboev allegedly stated his willingness to “kill President Obama” if called to do so by ISIS. The Brooklyn man also allegedly posted a request for help “getting weapons” in the same online forum message. The criminal complaint filed against the Brooklyn man attempting to join ISIS says that the suspect also wanted to “plant a bomb on Coney Island” if the Islamic State wanted him to engage in such a terror attack.
Akhror Saidakhmetov reportedly had this to say when unknowingly speaking to an undercover FBI agent:
“We will go and purchase one handgun… then go and shoot one police officer. Boom… Then, we will take his gun, bullets and a bulletproof vest… then, we will do the same with a couple of others. Then we will go to the FBI headquarters, kill the FBI people.”
During a phone call where he asked his mother for his passport, Saidakhmetov allegedly said, “If a person has a chance to join Islamic State and does not go there, on judgment day he will be asked why, and that it is a sin to live in the land of infidels.”
Abror Habibov is an organizer in a “domestic support network” which helped finance Saidakhmetov’s plans to fly to Syria and join ISIS, according to the FBI. Habibov reportedly operates kiosks at multiple malls in several states. The kiosks sell and repair cell phones and sell sell kitchenware as well. He reportedly hired Saidkhmetov to work for the mall kiosk business last fall.
