According to the BBC, Russell Crowe has been a Leeds United supporter since his youth.
They’ve reported that he used to watch BBC’s flagship soccer show, Match Of The Day, in Australia alongside his brother, Terry. But while Terry decided to follow Liverpool, Russell went for Leeds, who, at the time, was one of the strongest soccer teams in English soccer. This was when they were managed by Don Revie, and had players like Billy Bremner at their disposal.
However, their form has drastically nose-dived over the last decade, and they are currently in a financially perilous situation. At the moment, they are in 14th place in the Championship, which is the second tier of the English league. The club is owned by Eleonora Sport Limited, but their owner, Massimo Cellino, recently sold his stake in both the company and Leeds United.
Cellino was also found guilty of tax evasion last year, and because of this, he has failed the Football League’s “fit and proper person’s test,” which determines if an owner is financially stable enough to preside over a club.
Because of this, Leeds United’s future hangs in the balance.
But this perilous situation hasn’t stopped Crowe from showing his supporter for Leeds. As recently as Saturday the Australian thespian tweeted.
Well, well #Leeds great result — Russell Crowe (@russellcrowe) February 21, 2015
In fact, after sending out his original tweet declaring his interest in buying Leeds United, Crowe was messaged by @LeedsFansLLP, who insisted that they’d love to have him onboard in any capacity.
