Katey Sagal Joins Husband Kurt Sutter For New FX Show ‘Bastard Executioner’
Kurt Sutter’s hit biker gang drama Sons of Anarchy may have already ended, but he’s planning on continuing his partnership with FX. It was recently revealed that Sutter has a new show in the works for FX called The Bastard Executioner, and he’s rounding up some familiar faces, including his wife, and Sons of Anarchy actress, Katey Sagal. Sagal will be playing Annora of the Alders in the period drama. Annora is a prescient, mystical, and beautiful woman who offers predictions cures and potions. Aside from writing and executive producing the show, Sutter will also be playing Annora’s guardian, The Dark Mute Mate.
Bastard Executioner will star Australian actor Lee Jones as Wilkin Brattle, a warrior knight in King Edward I’s charge. Brattle, troubled by the war, vowed to lay down his sword until violence finds him again. Joining Jones and Sagal will be True Blood‘s Stephen Moyer as Milus Corbett, a street-smart and savvy chancellor. Timothy Murphy, who had a recurring role in Sons of Anarchy, will also be joining the cast as Father Ruskin. Ruskin is described as a brawny but gentle former soldier who became a priest.
Matthew Rhys, from FX spy thriller The Americans, is set to have a recurring role as Gruffudd y Blaidd. Blaidd is the smart and fearless leader of the Welsh rebels.
With a cast this big, this is by far Sutter’s most ambitious project to date. Prior to scoring a hit with his “Hamlet-by-way-of-Hells Angels” drama Sons of Anarchy, Sutter was also involved in the short-lived but much-loved cop show The Shield. Bastard Executioner will be written by Sutter while his Sons of Anarchy collaborator, Paris Barclay, will be directing the pilot. Brian Gazer is also attached as a producer. Production for the show’s pilot will begin on March 19 in Wales.
Katey Sagal is known for her role as Peggy Bundy in the sitcom Married with Children. Known mostly as a TV actress, Sagal also provided the voice for Leela in the animated TV series Futurama. In 2002, Sagal was cast as John Ritter’s husband on the TV show 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter. However, Ritter passed away after only completing the first three episodes of the second season. The show was cancelled in 2005.
She was eventually cast by husband Kurt Sutter in Sons of Anarchy as Gemma Teller, the matriarch of the Teller family and their biker gang.
