Michael Sam Reportedly Joins ‘Dancing With The Stars’ 2015 Spring Season
The Dancing with the Stars 2015 spring celebrity cast will be confirmed on Good Morning America Tuesday morning, but some scoop on the new season is starting to emerge now. Very few celebrity participants have been confirmed as of yet, but now footballer Michael Sam reportedly will be strutting his stuff this spring. What’s the scoop?
TMZ reports that Michael Sam, who was the first openly gay football player drafted into the NFL, has signed up to be on Season 20 of Dancing with the Stars. Seeing a football player on this season of DWTS won’t come as much of a surprise, as that’s a fairly regular occurrence in the spring season.
There had been rumors that perhaps Malcolm Butler of the New England Patriots or Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks — or even both — might be willing to take a spin on the dance floor. Some suspect, though, that if the show signed Sam, that means some of those other active players declined the opportunity.
Sam isn’t currently signed with any NFL teams. He practiced with a couple of squads for this last season, but nothing stuck. He has said he wants to train hard and hit the upcoming veteran’s combine this spring, but as TMZ notes, if he’s choosing to do DWTS some might say he perhaps has shifted his attention to a new direction career-wise. In terms of NFL players doing DWTS, that would make Michael Sam a bit of a different casting choice.
However, Sam won’t be the first gay male celebrity to hit Dancing with the Stars. Lance Bass danced in Season 7 with Lacey Schwimmer and Carson Kressley did DWTS in Season 13 with Anna Trebunskaya. Season 13 also featured Chaz Bono, who was was the first openly transgender cast member, who was partnered with Lacey Schwimmer.
If indeed Michael Sam is dancing in Season 20 of DWTS, who will he be partnered with? The show has already announced six female pro dancers: Emma Slater, Allison Holker, Peta Murgatroyd, Witney Carson, Kym Johnson, and Sharna Burgess. Some would say that just about any of those ladies could potentially be a great partner for Sam if the casting news is accurate.
There has already been a tease of Emma with her partner, and many believe he will turn out to be Bachelor Chris Soules. Sharna tweeted about meeting her partner Monday afternoon, but so far there haven’t been any big Dancing with the Stars spoilers about the pairings.
