Stephen Hawking Reacts To Eddie Redmayne’s Best Actor Win For ‘The Theory Of Everything’
Eddie Redmayne’s transformative performance as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything has been making waves for months. Throughout all of the award shows, Redmayne has expressed how amazing it was to spend time with the famous physicist.
Following Redmayne’s Best Actor win for The Theory of Everything, in which he plays the physicist as he struggles with ALS, Hawking took to Facebook to share his joy about the win.
“Congratulations to Eddie Redmayne for winning an Oscar for playing me in The Theory of Everything Movie. Well done Eddie, I’m very proud of you.”
Eddie Redmayne was overwhelmed by his win, and it showed when he delivered his emotional speech. After he collected his Oscar he made sure to put a spotlight on the ALS community despite being flustered by his win.
“This Oscar belongs to all of those people around the world battling ALS. It belongs to one exceptional family — Stephen, Jane, Jonathan, and the Hawking children.”
Unfortunately, Hawking was not in attendance at the ceremony, because he was too ill to fly out to Los Angeles. According to the Daily Mail, The Theory of Everything’s screenwriter, Anthony McCarten, broke the news. “Stephen has been told by doctors he is not well enough to fly here.” Redmayne said of Hawking’s absence, “He’ll be missed.”
That said, Redmayne is expected to celebrate the Oscar win with Stephen Hawking and his family. Following his win the actor told reporters in the press room, “I think I will certainly go to Cambridge at some point to see Stephen and Jane. They’ve been so kind to us throughout this process.”
Eddie Redmayne spoke with ITV’s Good Morning Britain about the proud moment, even though it’s a blur to him. “I can’t remember it at all, I just remember it being a sort of frenzied blur, but thank you. It’s this extraordinary thing where you’re lucky enough to tell a story like this, the amount of people involved that help make you be able to tell that story, there are always more people you need to thank.”
Redmayne told People magazine what the initial feeling was like when he has won the Best Actor award.
“Every kind of adrenaline, euphoria, excitement, nerves you can imagine!” As for his memories from the awards ceremony? Besides hearing his name being called, Redmayne said his favorites were, “Kissing my wife and hugging Cate Blanchett.”
