It’s probably the healthiest relationship among the four Pretty Little Liars , as well as the most adored, and fans still haven’t accepted that Paige McCullers, played to perfection by Lindsey Shaw, is really gone. The departure episode left PLL fans, devotees to the Paily storyline, as tear-soaked and heartbroken as Emily Fields herself.
Fans weren’t the only ones to be cut so deeply by Paige’s sudden departure. MTV reports that Pretty Little Liars executive producer Joseph Dougherty is also eager to see Paige and Emily reunited.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen for Emily and Paige, which is why when I wrote them parting in the airport, I wrote it the way I did. Paige very specifically says, ‘No, it’s not fair, but it is what’s supposed to happen to us right now.’ I wanted to leave the door open.”
It’s difficult to say what will happen with any certainty, as season six of PLL is still in the planning stages, but Dougherty assures Pretty Little Liars fans that, whatever may come, it will be in the best interests of the four starring characters of PLL . Dougherty insists that his number one goal is to remain as honest and respectful to the Pretty Little Liars story as possible.
For those that may doubt the forthright honesty and devotion of the Pretty Little Liars executive producer, he offers his own Paily fan fiction as proof of his dedication to the love of Emily and Paige.
“It’s sad and obsessive, yes,” Mr. Dougherty said. “As a writer, I’d love to have more opportunity to write for those two characters.”
Dougherty is so dedicated to the Paily storyline and to working with Shay Mitchell in particular that he often has to remind himself that his first duty is to the show as a whole, reports Wet Paint . He confesses that shooting Emily scenes are so enjoyable that he only begrudgingly finishes the scenes and moves on to the the next PLL scene.
“I come at this from at least three different points of view, and one of them is the job, which is basically you do need to create conflict for characters so that the characters themselves are interesting. I also approach it as a fan because I really like the couple [Emily and Paige], and I really like the actors. I’ve been surprised by how much fun I’ve had writing and directing them. And the arc of their relationship was arguably an important thing to do on television right now.”
Dougherty admits that in spite of the couple’s occasional disputes, Emily wouldn’t have grown into the woman she has become, as Pretty Little Liars evolved. On that note, the executive producer took the time to acknowledge the great contribution PLL fans have made to the show, through their unwavering support. He went on to say that, without the Pretty Little Liars fans, the show wouldn’t have endured as long as it has and couldn’t have grown into such a compelling, ongoing drama.
