PS4 Digital Sales Overrun By The Undead After New Zombie Titles Knock ‘GTA V’ Off The Top-Selling Spot On PSN
Zombies helped boost Playstation 4 digital sales from the PS Store last month after the undead-filled games Resident Evil HD and Dying Light dominated online sales on Playstation consoles for the start of the year. The latest remake to Capccom’s zombie classic, Resident Evil, was revealed to be the best-selling digital title on both the PS4 and PS3 in January after the official Playstation Blog released the top 20 PSN sales charts for last month.
Claiming the second spot in terms of digital sales on the PS4 last month was Techland’s Dying Light. This meant that the top two best-selling Playstation 4 titles over the Playstation Network were games centered around the undead. While many feel that zombies are overused and unimaginative in gaming, it is clear that PS4 owners are still willing to buy zombie-centric games.
As reported last month by the Inquisitr, the previous PSN sales chart had Grand Theft Auto V and Minecraft at the top of the list for PS4 digital sales. However, both games were pushed lower down the list thanks to the release of Resident Evil HD and Dying Light. GTA V came in just below the zombie titles to claim the third spot while the Playstation 4 edition of Minecraft fell to the number five slot behind Battlefield 4.
The launch of the new remastered version of Resident Evil also overtook Minecraft on digital PS3 sales for the month of January. It is rare for a game to perform better than 4J Studios’ console port of the popular sandbox block-building games since Minecraft: Playstation 3 Edition has regularly dominated Playstation Network sales since the game was first released in late 2013. Grand Theft Auto V also earned the number three spot on the Playstation 3, the exact same rank it held on the PS4.
In January, Sony also announced the top-selling digital titles for the entire year of 2014 for the Playstation 3, Playstation 3, and PS Vita. Bungie’s online shooter, Destiny, which has nearly fallen off the current top 20 charts, managed to edge out GTA V on the PS4, while Minecraft also unsurprisingly defeated Grand Theft Auto V on the Playstation 3. Minecraft was also the last year’s second best-selling game on the PS Vita following Sword Art Online.
It will be interesting to see if the zombie games will manage to continue their strong PSN sales this month or GTA V and Minecraft will be able to once again reclaim the top slots.
Did you contribute to the success of Resident Evil HD or Dying Light by digitally purchasing the PS4 editions of either game from the Playstation Store last month?
