James Franco And Zachary Quinto Star In Gay Threesome With Charlie Carver In ‘I Am Michael’ [Photo]

Will James Franco’s latest movie make fans forget about that whole Interview debacle? The actor failed to impress critics in the crass comedy, but his latest endeavor could up being award bait.

E! News recently shared a few stills from the indie movie I Am Michael, which recently debuted at the Sundance Film Festival. One of the photos depicts a pretty steamy moment between James Franco, Zachary Quinto, and Charlie Carver.

The actors’ characters reportedly take part in a threesome after meeting in a club. Franco and Quinto play a couple, and they invite Carver’s character home with them. I Am Michael is set during the 90s, and, judging from all the beads and glow sticks in the header photo, the aforementioned hotties are all ravers.

The movie is based on the life of Michael Glatze, a former gay rights activist. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Glatze became an anti-gay Christian pastor after a health scare, and he traded his boyfriend of 10 years for a girlfriend. A 2007 Christian Post article reveals that Glatze went from embracing homosexuality to equating it with “death to one’s soul.”

Because James Franco’s latest film explores the clashing worlds of gay culture and Christian fundamentalists, don’t be surprised if it causes just as much controversy as The Interview. I Am Michael is Justin Kelly’s directorial debut, and it’s produced by Gus Van Sant. It also stars Emma Roberts as Michael Glatze’s girlfriend.

I Am Michael isn’t James Franco’s only Sundance movie based on a true story. He also stars in the aptly-titled True Story, which tells the disturbing tale of convicted murderer Christian Longo. Longo murdered his wife and children in December 2001, and he adopted the alias “Michael Finkel” during the time he spent as a fugitive. Michael Finkel is a journalist who wrote for the New York Times at the time of the murderers, and he communicated with Longo after he was captured. True Story explores the relationship between Christian Longo and Michael Finkel (Jonah Hill).

James Franco told the Wall Street Journal that playing Longo was a huge challenge.

“You always try not to judge them, but I found it so hard with this character. I’m not really thinking about this guy – I hate him so much.”

True Story is directed by Rupert Goold, and one of its producers is Brad Pitt. According to the New York Times, Franco met Pitt for the first time at the Sundance premiere of True Story.

“We fell in love last night,” James revealed. “He’s the coolest guy.”

If James Franco decides to play a gay character for the umpteenth time in his next project, perhaps he should try convincing Brad Pitt to portray his love interest — they guys would definitely make a cute couple.

What do you think of James Franco’s Sundance movies based on real people? Would you rather see I Am Michael or True Story?
