‘The Walking Dead’ Will Cross Over With ‘Fear The Walking Dead’ Spin-Off: But How?

The latest news about The Walking Dead spin-off will likely leave some fans scratching their heads.

According to a video on Nerdist, the original Walking Dead show is going to cross over with its companion series, Fear the Walking Dead. Jessica Chobot dropped this huge spoiler that Talking Dead host Chris Hardwick doesn’t even know about.

“Our sources tell us that at least one of the characters who will be leading ‘The Walking Dead’ spin-off will be appearing for a six-episode arc in season 6 of ‘The Walking Dead.’ They’ll cross paths with team Rick in Georgia before presumably making their way toward the West Coast for the L.A.-based show.”

Chobot reveals that Fear the Walking Dead is supposed to take place while Rick Grimes was in a coma during the early stages of the zombie virus outbreak. This is what makes Chobot’s spoiler about the original series so confusing — is the L.A character going to appear in flashbacks that play out during six episodes, or will the character appear long after the events of the companion series? Chobot says that the character is heading toward L.A. rather than leaving the city, so the flashback theory makes the most sense.

Obviously, the spin-off character won’t cross paths with comatose Rick, but perhaps he or she will run into a few future members of the sheriff’s group of survivors. This would be a fun way to bring back characters like Andrea, Shane, Dale, T-Dog, Merle, and Morales.

It’s also possible that Chobot got her info about the companion series character wrong — perhaps he or she won’t encounter any current members of Rick’s group. As the Inquisitr previously reported, The Walking Dead will be introducing a few new characters in the near future. Stars joining the cast include Ross Marquand and Alexandra Breckenridge. The Walking Dead might explore the back stories of these new characters during Season 6, and perhaps one of them will cross paths with the Fear the Walking Dead character during the time Rick was in his coma.

There have also been rumors that the spin-off could feature a character that has already been killed off on The Walking Dead. As the Inquisitr previously reported, CDC doctor Edwin Jenner (Noah Emmerich) might make an appearance on the companion series.

The companion series might have more than one connection to The Walking Dead, but producer Robert Kirkman insists that the spin-off will be “startlingly different” from the original AMC show.

“It’s going to be a show about a different type of family that we haven’t explored in ‘The Walking Dead’ thus far,” Kirkman told Entertainment Weekly.

According to Bleeding Cool, this “different type of family” is a dysfunctional one plagued by problems including divorce, drugs, self-harm, and illness. When the companion series begins, many citizens view the zombie virus as nothing but an urban legend. However, it won’t take long for it to become a full-blown epidemic that’s impossible to ignore. It sounds like Fear the Walking Dead will feel a lot like FX’s vampire series The Strain.

The Walking Dead fans aren’t just getting new characters, a new setting, and a different time period in the spin-off. Kirkman promised that Fear the Walking Dead will also have a “different look” and “new visual language.”

What do you think of The Walking Dead crossover with the companion series? Is it a good idea, or would you rather see the shows kept completely separate?
