Stephen Hawking Released From Hospital, Will Miss Birthday Celebration
Stephen Hawking was scheduled to celebrate his 70th birthday today by attending a conference held at the University of Cambridge where his remarkable career will be honored. The renowned physicist has fallen ill, however, and will have to watch the proceedings from his home.
Vice Chancellor Leczek Borysiewicz said that Hawking, who suffers from Lou Gehrig’s disease, was released from the hospital on Friday and is not well enough to attend the conference.
Borysiewicz told attendees at the conference:
“Unfortunately (Stephen Hawking’s) recovery has not been fast enough for him to be able to be here…. If you’re listening Stephen, happy birthday from all of us here today.”
Borysiewicz didn’t specify why Hawking was in the hospital but did say that he believes Hawking will be well enough to stop by Cambridge next week to meet some of the attendees.
The Inquisitr reported yesterday that scientists were baffled at how Hawking has survived Lou Gehrig’s disease this long. Director of the Motor Neurone Disease Care and Research Centre in London said:
“I don’t know of anyone who’s survived this long… )it’s) extraordinary.”
The Associated Press reports that most people die within a few years after being diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease. Hawking was diagnosed at 21.
Hawking revolutionized the field of theoretical astrophysics with best-selling books like “A Brief History of Time” and “The Universe in a Nutshell.” And although Hawking is regarded as an expert on perplexing matters like black holes and time travel, the renowned scientists says that he’ll never truly understand one aspect of the universe; women.
