‘The Simpsons’ Are Coming To ‘Minecraft: Xbox’ Editions

Remember The Simpsons episode last year that drew Springfield and all the characters in the style of Minecraft? Well, now we can consider that an official part of the game as Microsoft and 4J Studios announced a Simpsons skin pack Thursday for Minecraft: Xbox One Edition and Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition.

The Simpsons skin pack will be released to Minecraft for both Xbox consoles in late February for $1.99. It features the Simpsons family of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie plus “19 of Springfield Elementary School’s beloeved characters from the Emmy Award-winning animated show.”

So, it sounds like Principal Skinner, Groundskeeper Willie, and Mrs. Crabapple are in for the adults. Nelson, the Flanders kids, Ralph Wiggum, Milhouse, and others are the likely Minecraft character skins the kid side. More characters are sure to come.

“We have an active community of more than 17 million die-hard Minecrafters on Xbox Live enjoying the wide range of downloadable content on Xbox, and they have been clamoring for us to bring Simpsons characters to the game,” said Phil Spencer, Head of Xbox. “We are thrilled to partner with Twentieth Century Fox and Gracie Films to bring The Simpsons to life on Minecraft Xbox 360 and Xbox One editions. I can’t wait to see what the community creates.”

“Like The Simpsons, Minecraft is a true cultural phenomenon embraced by people of all ages, from every corner of the globe,” said Roz Nowicki, executive vice president of global sales and retail for Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products. “We know fans of the show will have a ton of fun bringing the colorful characters of Springfield into the intricate worlds they’ve been building in Minecraft.”

Minecraft: PlayStation Edition owners wondering if this will come to their consoles probably shouldn’t get their hopes up. These kind of exclusive deals have been common for the Xbox consoles. There were the Doctor Who skin packs, for example. Now that Microsoft owns Mojang, it looks like they may become more common.

It’s a shame though that 4J Studios is only going so far as a Simpsons skin pack for Minecraft though. A full Mash-up Pack featuring the skins, music, and a recreation of Springfield could be pretty sweet. Who wouldn’t want to go visit the Mr. Burns’ nuclear power plant, Moe’s or the tire dump fire? It looks like Minecraft players will have to create their own.
