Kanye West And Paul McCartney Take Tumble On Billboard Hot 100
Kanye West might be one of the hottest artists over the past ten years, but it seems like he can’t score a hit these days. Kanye obviously thought adding a legend like Paul McCartney would help his new song “Only One” become a hit. Kanye debuted at number 35 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 singles chart last week, but this week it falls to number 54. Perhaps Kanye West isn’t set to rule 2015 like he wants.
Paul McCartney has nothing to lose from the disappointing chart performance; he is a legend. However, Kanye West was expecting “Only One” to become a comeback single after his last album Yeezus flopped. It looks like Kanye’s upcoming 2015 album, which is untitled as of today, is in trouble. Perhaps the whole Kim Kardashian marriage isn’t really helping him separate his image from his music.
Even though Yeesus was a sales disappointment, the album was still loved by many critics. However, “Only One” has received some dismal reviews. Randall Roberts of the Los Angeles Times says “Only One” is a disaster.
“It hits at the two-minute mark, the realization that ‘Only One’ featuring Paul McCartney isn’t headed into that glorious West-ian stratosphere that we’ve come to expect over the past decade. At the three-minute mark, all hope is lost.”
However, not all reviews have been disastrous. Matt Pais of Red Eye Chicago believes the new Kanye West single shouldn’t be dissed.
“Multiple layers and generations of love shine through the track, reinforcing that West will do pretty much whatever he wants and, most of the time, make it work better than expected.”
In a recent press release, Kanye West talked about the “Only One” single and how he felt recording it.
“My mom was singing to me, and through me to my daughter…The small group in the room kept listening: ‘Hello my Only One…just like the morning sun…you’ll keep on rising till the sky knows your name.'”
The press release goes on to call “Only One” an anthem of positive reflection, hopefulness and joyous celebration to usher in a New Year. Though team Kanye West certainly isn’t celebrating the chart fall right now, he probably isn’t giving up. The song could still catch on when an official music video is released. Kanye West and Paul McCartney haven’t even started the live promotional phase for the single and performances of the song could lift it back up the charts. What do you think of Kanye West’s new single? Do you think it will eventually become a hit?
