Ron Paul Fans Send Kelly Clarkson Climbing Up the Charts
Coming out in support of Ron Paul- who is considered in some circles to be a bit of a fringe candidate for the GOP in 2012- can be risky for a celebrity, and the strongly polarized vibe in the US ahead of next year’s elections can be difficult to gauge.
But that didn’t stop former American Idol Kelly Clarkson from voicing her support for Ron Paul, and the artist tweeted to fans:
“I love Ron Paul. I liked him a lot during the last republican nomination and no one gave him a chance… If he wins the nomination for the Republican party in 2012 he’s got my vote. Too bad he probably won’t.”
Predictably (the move was a bit edgy for her mixed fan base on Twitter) not all of Clarkson’s fans were necessarily supportive of the singer’s Ron Paul endorsement. Several fans expressed disappointment due to Clarkson’s significant gay fanbase, and it seemed the move might harm Clarkson’s album sales.
However, Ron Paul fans are a loyal bunch, and several came out in force to purchase Clarkson’s records after the outcry on Twitter. Clarkson later added:
“I do not support racism. I support gay rights, straight rights, women’s rights, men’s rights, white/black/purple/orange rights… I like Ron Paul because he believes in less government and letting the people (all of us) make the decisions and mold our country.”
Ron Paul fans that organized the Clarkson buying push seem to have made a bit of an impact- Clarkson’s record moved up two places, from #13 to #15 on the iTunes charts. Below, a clip about the allegations surrounding Ron Paul and racist newsletters:
