Comedian Stephen Fry Announces Engagement To Elliot Spencer

Actor and comedian Stephen Fry, 57, has announced his engagement to partner Elliot Spencer, 27. The British entertainer had planned to keep the upcoming nuptials private and marry Spencer in a quiet ceremony, but news broke of their plans before that could happen.

Fry posted to his Twitter account, “Oh. It looks as though a certain cat is out of a certain bag. I’m very, very happy of course but had hoped for a private wedding. Fat chance!”

Fry has given formal notice to wed Spencer at a register office in Dereham, near his hometown in Norfolk. Documents with such announcements are publicly displayed and state that the wedding will take place in Breckland Business Centre, which is where the register’s office is located. The news was confirmed by his personal secretary. According to the documents, the couple has one year from the date of registry to get married.

“Stephen Fry is very happy and proud to say that he has set the wheels in motion for a wedding sometime in the future but no date has been set due to a busy work schedule.”

While he was disappointed that the news was broken before he and his partner could enjoy a quiet ceremony, Fry did send out another tweet following all of the support and well wishes from his fans.

“Thank you all SO much for your kind congratulations. Deeply touched xxx.”

Fry’s soon-to-be-husband, Elliot Spencer, is a stand up comedian and writer from Cheshire, England. The son of a millionaire property developer, Spencer is known for being a “very happy person.” It is said that the pair met over the summer and became very close.

Stephen’s engagement has come as a relief to those closest to him as the past couple pf years has been very difficult for the actor. Despite his success and legendary status as a member of the elite British comedy set, Fry has experienced very difficult times. His has been open about his struggle with depression and drugs, and even states he used cocaine while visiting Buckingham Palace. He was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and has attempted suicide multiple times, the most recent of which occurred in 2012 after taking a large dose of pills with alcohol. Many of Stephen’s friends have credited Spencer with putting a smile back on his face and turning his life around.

One friend said, “Since Stephen met Elliott, it is like he has a new lust for life. We’ve got the old Stephen back. He has found new hope in Elliott and they thrive off each other.”
