Barack Obama Surprises Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder During Hawaii Trip
President Barack Obama spent some time with Eddie Vedder, the frontman for Pearl Jam, during his trip to Hawaii.
Alongside his daughters, Sasha and Malia, Obama went to Vedder’s house in Kailua. Vedder’s abode is not far away from where the Obamas were renting a home for their vacation. According to NBC News, Vedder and Obama spent less than half an hour together.
The White House declared that Eddie Vedder and Barack Obama are old friends. Their friendship began back in 2012, after Eddie Vedder played during Barack Obama’s re-election campaign while they were in Florida. In fact, Vedder actually played the Hawaiian ukulele at this performance, which was held in Tampa, Florida.
Obama visited Vedder on the last day of his holiday in Oahu, Hawaii, before he returned to Washington on Sunday. Barack Obama and his family have been in Hawaii for two weeks.
Also on Saturday, Obama visited the cemetery where his grandfather on his mother’s side is buried, as well as spending some quality time with his sister. He then went on to spend a few more hours relaxing on the beach.
During his trip, Barack Obama mostly played golf and simply relaxed. He also squeezed in some political work, as he found time to liaise with Najib Razak, the Malaysian Prime Minister.
However, Barack Obama’s trip wasn’t entirely plain sailing. The most prominent story to have emerged from his trip to Hawaii was his accidental wedding crasher antics that resulted in a couple’s service having its location changed.
The pair, Natalie Heimel and Edward Mallue Jr., who were both captains in the Army, were informed that their wedding venue would have to be changed because Barack Obama planned on playing golf at Marine Corps Base Hawaii.
Obama plays on the course on a regular basis, and once he had decided to do so last Sunday, they were then given different options for where their service could take place. According to Naile Brenna though, who is the manager at the establishment, it was “much prettier and much nicer venue.”
Because of the inconvenience that he created, Barack Obama decided to call up the bride, issued an apology, and then congratulated the pair on their nuptials. The groom’s sister, Jamie McCarthy, later told CNN that the phone call “made their day.”
