Kaneohe, Hawaii: Obama’s Golf Trip Forces Army Couple To Move Wedding, President Apologizes
Two Army captains were preparing to enjoy their wedding in Kaneohe, Hawaii, but a last minute interruption caused them to have to find a new location, rather than the venue they had picked out. The interruption actually ended up being a golf game played by none other than President Barack Obama.
According to Bloomberg, Natalie Heimel and fiance Edward Mallue Jr. were just leaving their wedding rehearsal on the 16th tee at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course when the bad news arrived. They were told that their wedding scheduled for the following day was going to have to be relocated.
Obama was going to be playing a golf game on the day of their wedding, and he had the right to play on through.
Actually, the couple found out that the president was going to be in Kaneohe, Hawaii, at the same time as him, so they invited him to their wedding. He informed them he would have to decline, but then the White House alerted them of the change of plans.
Jamie McCarthy, the sister of the groom, found a bit of irony in it all.
“It was kind of ironic they got the letter from them and then, within hours, they were told they had to be moved due to him. It was emotional, especially for her — she’s the bride and in less than 24 hours they had to change everything they had planned.”
The Star Advertiser states that the last minute alert to the couple wasn’t planned, but the White House wasn’t originally aware of the scheduling conflict.
The golf course is actually located on the Marine Corps Base Hawaii, and is a place that Obama usually frequents when visiting the state. Those planning events at the time the president is in town are informed that there could be last-minute changes.
Once all was said and done, the couple chose a different location than the golf course in Kaneohe, Hawaii, and the wedding was said to be beautiful. McCarthy did say that the president was considerate of the situation.
“He apologized and congratulated them. We were all there, it was perfect. Made their day.”
That apology and the congratulatory remarks came directly from the president as he placed a call to the Army couple.
While President Obama is golfing in Kaneohe, Hawaii, it would be best for any Army couples not to plan a wedding or any event of that kind. Sure, it’s not ideal to have to move and shift your plans, but then again… he is the president.
