Chris Rock Divorces Wife Of 20 Years Malaak Compton-Rock
Chris Rock is enjoying one of his most hearty helpings of adoration from the public in years right now. His newest movie, Top Five, is getting the kind of reviews that mainstream comedies usually can’t even buy. The comedy is also holding up pretty well against the holiday season competition, especially in age where galaxy-spanning superhero movies are all the rage.
Some news about Chris that broke today might have fans wondering if all of this success is perhaps negatively affecting his personal life. Rock has filed for divorce from his wife, Malaak Compton-Rock, a philanthropist and founder of the nonprofit styleWorks. Chris and Malaak’s divorce is especially shocking, considering that the pair have made their love last for nearly 20 years. Rock’s wife released an official statement, asking for a curious public to withhold prying into the end of their marriage, while assuring that her charity work would not suffer, reported People.
“After much contemplation and 19 years of marriage, Chris and I have decided to go our separate ways. Being fortunate enough to lead a life of service by working with those most vulnerable makes me well aware of life’s blessings, even when faced with difficulties… While recognizing that this is a significant change, my children remain at the center of my life and their well-being is my top priority. It is in this spirit that I sincerely ask that their privacy and the privacy of our family be respected during this transition in our lives.”
Rock and his wife have been plagued by ugly speculation about their marriage for several years, including rumors in 2010 that he had gotten another woman pregnant. The couple vehemently denied that a divorce was imminent. In 2007, Chris spurred rumors when he told People that it was difficult to be married to a comedian.
“The best part is just having a partner. There is no real worst part. I’m not going to say there’s a worst part. I mean, I’m a comedian – comedians like to work alone. So maybe I’m not the ideal guy to be married to, in that sense.”
Despite the bad tidings for his love life, Chris Rock seems to be holding up. He tweeted this joke the same day the news of his divorce broke.
