Taco Bell’s Gay Couple Commercial: ‘We Didn’t Make It, But We Like It’
A Taco Bell commercial featuring a gay couple cuddling, marrying, and enjoying Taco Bell has gone wildly viral, receiving thousands of new views today alone. Initially, Taco Bell had not responded to inquiries, but did so on Friday night, saying, essentially, that they didn’t create the commercial, but do like it, and that it does indeed represent their company’s views.
The commercial is below.
On Friday night, Taco Bell’s marketing department responded to an inquiry about the ad featuring a gay couple. Rob Poetsch, a Director of Public Affairs at Taco Bell, Corp, offered a corporate response.
“We didn’t create this ad, but we can see the people who did share the same Live Mas passion for our brand—and our breakfast—as we do. Although we cannot condone unauthorized use of our intellectual property, we are impressed with their work and would be open to meeting with them.”
There has been much speculation that the gay-positive commercial was created and leaked intentionally by Taco Bell, either as a marketing ploy, or, as LGBTQ Nation suggests, to “test the waters” with reaching out to the gay community, without the risk of negative response from the anti-gay lobbies.
As far as that goes, other fast food chains have produced gay-friendly commercials and marketing campaigns, such as Burger King’s Proud Whopper — in a rainbow wrapper, the text read “We are all the same inside,” according to Time.
The speculation about Taco Bell’s gay couple commercial can at last be put to rest, however, with this response from Taco Bell’s Public Affairs. They’ve made not only their role (or rather, lack thereof) in the commercial’s production, but their position on a pro-gay advertisement, quite clear.
It’s notable that the response from the company did not even focus on the ad including a gay couple, but on the enthusiasm and love for the brand that the couple, and the ad, seemed to express, showing Taco Bell as a great way to “stuff your morning” with everything you could want or hope for.
As for the public response, that’s been overwhelmingly positive. There have been some negative comments on the YouTube video and social media, but most have been quite approving.
This is absolutely adorable.
OMG, Taco Bell breakfast crunch wrap sounds soooo yummy!
Indeed ? – it’s totally adorkably cute!
Perhaps the creator of this Taco Bell gay couple ad will come forward, since the company is open to hearing from them, and the commercial can become an official one.
