New Pee-Wee Herman Movie Heading Exclusively To Netflix
Have you heard Pee-Wee Herman’s secret word of the day? We’ll give you a hint: It’s no longer the word “Universal.” Pee-Wee’s word of the day is “Netflix.”
Netflix (ahh!) has stepped in to pick up the slack and get things rolling in 2015. Paul Reubens is set to star and Judd Apatow will produce the new Pee-Wee Herman movie, according to Variety. Apatow is the funny brain behind The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, and many other hilarious films.
Right now the film is still missing multiple necessities, such as an official title, a director, and the story itself. The new Pee-Wee Herman movie will be written by Reubens and comedian Paul Rust, according to Starpulse.com.
Netflix is getting people in Pee-Wee Herman mode by adding Pee-Wee’s Playhouse: Vol. 1 and Pee-Wee’s Playhouse: Vol. 2 to its growing selection of movies and TV shows. Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, Big Top Pee-Wee and The Pee-Wee Herman Show were already available to Pee-Wee fans on Netflix.
According to New York Daily News, the 62-year-old actor who is well known for his portrayal of Pee-Wee Herman hasn’t played the character in a movie since 1988. In 2010, Reubens brought Pee-Wee’s famed Playhouse for a strong run on Broadway.
Reubens has had Pee-Wee on his mind for years and has been contemplating a comeback for his beloved character. Reubens played Pee-Wee Herman opposite Andy Samberg in a Saturday Night Live sketch in 2011, adding to speculation of Pee-Wee’s return to the screen in a TV show or movie.
Pee-Wee Herman has a classic cult-like large fan base. There are over 1,420,000 likes on the Pee-Wee Herman official Facebook page. Children seem to be drawn to his silliness and child-like personality. However, there are many adult undertones in his movies for the big kids to enjoy.
It is unknown whether Netflix is going to attempt a movie theater release or add it to their library, but the new Pee-Wee Herman movie will end up there eventually.
