Muhammad Ali Reportedly ‘Stopped Breathing,’ Was ‘Revived By The Paramedics’
Boxing legend Muhammad Ali was hospitalized over the weekend.
As previously reported by the Inquisitr, the 72-year-old former heavyweight champion was diagnosed with pneumonia.
New details of the events that led up to Muhammad Ali being hospitalized have been released by Radar Online – including what reportedly took place before the paramedics arrived.
According to what an inside source revealed to Radar, Muhammad Ali “stopped breathing” Friday night. The source also shared details about the champ’s current condition during his hospital stay.
“[Family members] called 911. He was revived by the paramedics and is in ICU with fluid on the lungs. He is on a respirator and IV’s.”
The report further claims that Muhammad Ali’s daughters (Hana and Laila) rushed to Phoenix, Arizona, in order to be with their father.
Bob Gunnell, the official spokesman of Muhammad Ali, made a formal announcement on Saturday, confirming that Ali was indeed diagnosed with pneumonia.
“[Muhammad Ali] is being treated by his team of doctors and is in stable condition.”
NBC News reports that Bob Gunnell also shared details about the prognosis.
“Because the pneumonia was caught early, his prognosis is good with a short hospital stay expected.”
Even though the spokesman stated that Ali was in stable condition, the inside source revealed to Radar that this health setback could be “dire.”
“[Ali’s] entire family is hoping he makes it to his 73rd birthday on January 17.”
In addition to his current case of pneumonia, Muhammad Ali has been struggling with Parkinson’s disease for decades. Ali was first diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease 30 years ago in 1984 – three years after he officially retired from professional boxing. Over the past year, reports confirm that Ali’s health has been declining at a much more rapid pace — especially since he can no longer speak.
In the prime of his life and boxing career, Muhammad Ali was able to maintain one of the most impressive records and overall personas of all time with a total of 56 wins (37 by knockout) and only 5 losses. Even years after Muhammad Ali decided to hang up his boxing gloves for good, he was known for still showing a considerable amount of gratitude and appreciation for his fans.
In a 1988 interview with Tim Smith, Ali opened up about his love for his fans and why he refused to reject their requests for an autograph.
“I enjoy the people. I remember what it was like when I was growing up to see the people I admired — Joe Louis, Jack Johnson. People want to be a part of that. They enjoy meeting people that inspire them. If I can make someone happy, that’s what I enjoy.”
Radar reports that Yolanda “Lonnie” Williams Ali, Muhammad’s wife of 28 years, is expected to release a statement about her husband’s condition in the near future.
