’24’ Done For Good? Kiefer Sutherland Says He Can’t See Going Back For More
Fans were happy to embrace the return of 24 last summer in the revival season titled Live Another Day, and everybody was left hoping for more. The network definitely left the door open and solid ratings left many thinking that there could definitely be more to come. While Fox hasn’t definitively said they won’t bring the show back, a new interview from Kiefer Sutherland may not give fans much reason for hope.
Kiefer Sutherland talked with the Telegraph about his new project with Stephen Fry titled Marked, and naturally the topic of 24 arose. Those who tuned in to the revitalized series last summer, said all along to be a standalone season with just 12 episodes, know that it could easily be brought back for more. Live Another Day was done in such a way that it did wrap up a number of loose ends left hanging by the prior season that aired in 2010. However, it also ended with new developments that could be pursued in further episodes.
At the time of the finale, all signs pointed to those with the show being open to discussing the possibility of doing more, once everybody had been given a chance to decompress a bit. Nothing concrete has been shared one way or another about more 24 since then though.
While the fresh season did give fans closure, it also gave them hope. Fans loved having the show back and it was wrapped in such a way that there could easily be another season pulled together. However, could that happen without Kiefer Sutherland? Though the actor points out that he’s thought he was done before, his latest interview would indicate that he may think he’s wrapped up his portrayal of Jack Bauer for good.
Sutherland says,
“Me, I don’t see going back to it. We had set out to do 12 episodes to end the show and deal with some of the past history of the show. It was also an irresistible opportunity to go shoot in England. So for all of those reasons it made sense to do that last season.”
He adds, though, “But I think I said the same thing at the end of season 8 so I would hate to be held to that.”
As TVLine notes, there have still been rumblings that there could be another season or a feature movie, something that has been bandied about for years. While Sutherland may be saying at this point that he thinks he’s done playing Jack Bauer, many 24 fans suspect that if the money and concept were right, he could be lured back into the role.
While fans would happily take another round of the show next summer, Sutherland’s latest statements would seemingly dash the hopes for that. However, the door does seem to be cracked at least a wee bit for the possibility coming together at some point. Should Kiefer Sutherland come back as Jack Bauer for another season, or a movie version, of 24, or was Live Another Day the proper send-off to the series and character?
