The most recent casualty of the Sony hacking event is the decision to pull the upcoming film The Interview from theaters. The Interview was Sony Pictures’ film about an American talk show that gets the opportunity to interview Kim Jong-un and are asked by the CIA to help assassinate the North Korean leader.
It is for this plot device that a group of hackers, the FBI believes originated from North Korea, threatened Sony and several movie theaters with “9/11 style” attacks. The threat was used to force Sony to stop the release of The Interview . The Inquisitr reported on the cancellation of the premiere for the new film. Many have taken to Twitter and other outlets to voice their outrage, as the FBI originally was stating the threats were not credible.
While most of the theaters that originally cancelled The Interview remain “Mum,” a Texas theater is doing opposite of retreating into the shadows. The Alamo Drafthouse, according to Variety, had actually intended on showing the film. The Texas theater said as much on a Twitter post.
“FOR THE RECORD: We were still going to show # TheInterviewMovie …”
However, since Sony pulled The Interview entirely, the Texas theater came up with a more appropriate idea. They chose to show Team America: World Police. The Team America screening is for free, according to the Hollywood Reporter, and the Texas establishment will hand out American flags. Though, it was not specified, other various “patriotic items” will be passed out as well.
The Hollywood Reporter stated that the Alamo Drafthouse’s creative manager said, in choosing Team America , that they “were trying to make the best out of a bad situation.”
At this time, only the Alamo Drafthouse in Dallas, Texas will be making the replacement on December 27. The Texas theater made a bold statement on their website, which expressed how they felt about utilizing Team America as an Interview replacement.
“So celebrate your Independence this year with the Action Pack. We’ll have subtitles for all the songs and all of our favorite quotes, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to scream out ‘AMERICA! **** YEAH!’ at the top of your lungs. And yeah, we will have American flags, red white and blue streamers, balloons, and more for everyone. And THAT is how true American heroes will be celebrating this year, but if you want to let the terrorists win…well, that’s your prerogative.”
Team America: World Police is a satirical film about an “elite counter-terrorism” organization that eventually needs to do battle with Kim Jong-un’s father Kim Jong-il, as he is plotting to use weapons of mass destruction against the U.S. So, it would appear, the replacement to a film poking fun at Kim Jong-un is a film poking fun about Kim Jong-il.
One must wonder if North Korea will happy with the Interview replacement. The Team America showing also celebrates the tenth anniversary of the film.
