‘The Interview’ Movie Might Be Released Online In Pay-Per-View Format To Avoid Theater Violence
Update: ‘The Interview’ Movie On YouTube: Here’s how to find the YouTube link to The Interview full-length movie on Christmas Day.
It’s difficult to think of a movie in recent history that has caused as much consternation as The Interview. As reported by the Inquisitr, hacked Sony files have already revealed the film’s death scene of Kim Jong-un — a video posted on YouTube, along with other leaked files and emails from Sony executives – and not merely ones discussing The Interview topics.
However, with each new development that the hacked files bring – all prompted by the planned Christmas Day release of The Interview – more concern looms. As reported by Forbes, terrorist attacks akin to 9/11 violence have already been lobbed against moviegoers and theaters because of The Interview, a threat that has caused at least one major theater chain, Carmike Cinemas, to declare they won’t show The Interview. Perhaps by not showing The Interview movie in theaters on Christmas Day – or any other day – other movies scheduled to play alongside The Interview movie may not experience lost ticket sales.
Sony has left it up to theaters to decide to show The Interview movie or not – and TMZ reports that there is talk of Sony releasing The Interview on some sort of pay-per-view platform instead. TMZ called it an odd move to release The Interview movie via a pay-per-view venue if Sony wants the hacking to stop – and indeed, showing The Interview movie somewhere like Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, or YouTube for a small fee per viewing might not stop the hackers from hacking Sony, but it would at least mitigate the threats of terrorizing moviegoers and theater owners.
Also, showing The Interview movie online and allowing folks who want to legally watch it a way to pay for The Interview movie legally could help divert the income that would’ve been lost by those who normally would’ve paid to see The Interview in theaters back to Sony. Sony might discover that releasing The Interview online makes them more money in the long run.
Releasing The Interview online is already a brilliant thought being debated on a Reddit thread, with those positing the theory that if Sony decides to release The Interview online instead of – or in addition to – releasing it in theaters on Christmas Day, the hackers have won. Others say that offering the movie movie online as a digital download would be a great way to offer poetic justice in the end. Perhaps all this controversy will prompt studios to do what moviegoers have wanted for years now anyway: give people the choice to watch newly premiering movies online or at theaters.
