‘The Interview’ Premiere Cancelled At Carmike Theaters, Guardians Of Peace Threats Continue
The Interview premiere has been cancelled in New York City and at all Carmike theaters. The Sony Hackers with alleged ties to North Korea have threatened a “9/11 style attack” at any theaters showing the film, which pokes fun at Kim Jong-un. The move plot involves two spies posing as journalists attempting to assassinate the dictator.
The North Korean hackers who released the now infamous Sony emails call themselves the Guardians of Peace. The cyber hackers have also warned those who live near the Carmike theaters and other venues showing The Interview to “leave home.”
“Warning — We will clearly show it to you at the very time and places ‘The Interview‘ be shown, including the premiere, how bitter fate those who seek fun in terror should be doomed to,” the Guardians of Peace’s warning message from the North Korean cyber hackers said. “Soon all the world will see what an awful movie Sony Pictures Entertainment has made. The world will be full of fear.”
Carmike Cinemas have experienced significant backlash online after deciding to cancel all showing of The Interview. Carmike operates 278 theaters across the nation. Carmike Cinemas, a Georgia-based company, is the fourth largest theater chain in America, with Regal, AMC, and Cinemark being the largest. None of the other theater chains have yet stated publicly any plans to cancel The Interview Christmas showings.
The massive theater chain was accused to bowing to terrorists and thwarting free speech. On Tuesday, Sony Pictures Entertainment told Carmike Cinemas that they would be “supportive of their individual decisions” on whether or not to show The Interview. The comedy, which mocks North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un, is still scheduled for a Christmas release — at any theater still willing to show the flick.
The Guardians of Peace hackers’ threat specifically noted that a 9/11 style attack would occur at the “very times and places” The Interview will premiere or first be shown. A Los Angeles The Interview premiere was held on December 11 without a hitch. The Department of Homeland Security and the FBI are investigating the North Korea cyber hackers threats, but have yet not found evidence of a credible terrorism plot. A Sony staffer who spoke with the New York Times on the condition of anonymity said that theaters housed in shopping malls have been pressured by facility owners and neighboring stores not to show The Interview.
