Tim Burton Says Beetlejuice Sequel Is ‘Closer Than Ever’
After 26 years, the long-awaited sequel to the 1988 Tim Burton film Beetlejuice is on its way. The film revolved around a ghost couple played by Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin who haunt their former home with Betelgeuse, played by Michael Keaton, scaring away the new homeowners. The film also starred Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, and Jeffrey Jones.
The Beetlejuice sequel has been rumored since 2012, and in a previous report by Inquisitr, Michael Keaton said that he was exchanging emails with Burton regarding the sequel.
Burton and Keaton are busy with recent projects such as Big Eyes and Birdman, and in an interview with MTV News last October, Keaton said that they were waiting for a script for the Beetlejuice sequel. Now, Burton has confirmed that the sequel is indeed on its way.
Burton said that he would be returning as the director of the film. When asked whether Winona Ryder would be returning, he replied on the affirmative.
“Oh yeah, yeah yeah yeah. Oh yeah, oh yeah, Yeah yeah, oh yeah.”
Recently, Ryder and Burton worked together on a video for The Killers.
“I worked with [Ryder], I hadn’t seen her in a while… and she was so great. I was so happy to see her. So those kinds of elements mean something to me. Michael, and her… and that character, I just miss it, there’s some freedom about that character that I love.”
Coming Soon also interviewed Burton regarding his new film Big Eyes, and they also squeezed in a question about the Beetlejuice sequel.
“It’s a character that I love and I miss and I miss actually working with Michael. There’s only one Betelgeuse. We’re working on a script and I think it’s probably closer than ever and I’d love to work with him again.”
Tim Burton’s biographical drama Big Eyes is scheduled to be released on December 25 in the United States. Burton will also be busy shooting Peregrine: Home for Peculiars, a film adaptation of the book Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs.
