‘Family Guy’ Takes On The Trailer For ‘Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens’ [Video]

Family Guy fans will probably have to wait many moons before Seth MacFarlane gets to spoof Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens. However, they can get a glimpse of what the animated parody might look like by checking out a faux teaser trailer featuring Peter Griffin and the gang.

The Star Wars: Episode VII trailer has been recreated and recast with Family Guy characters. Entertainment Weekly recently released a list of Star Wars character names, so die-hard fans already know that Cleveland Brown is Stormtrooper Finn (John Boyega), Joe Swanson is beeping ball droid BB-8, Lois Griffin is giant flash drive rider Rey (Daisy Ridley), Chris Griffin is X-Wing pilot Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), Peter Griffin is whoever is flying the Millennium Falcon, and Stewie Griffin is Kylo Ren, the mysterious cloaked figure with the controversial lightsaber.

Movie Fanatic reports that Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane is responsible for the Star Wars: The Force Awakens parody. However, it almost looks like a fan-made video. Peter’s line, “Well I just realized my spaceship works better when I have the keys,” was taken from a previous Family Guy Star Wars special titled “Something, Something, Something Dark Side.” It’s likely that the other spoken lines were also lifted from past Family Guy episodes. However, the joke about the actual parody “maybe coming after Ted 4 or something” is very Family Guy-esque, and it appears as though the trailer was first shared on the TBS Twitter page.

Unfortunately, Seth McFarlane might not ever get the chance to insert his Family Guy characters into The Force Awakens world. When the three previous Family Guy Star Wars parodies aired, Lucasfilm wasn’t owned by Disney. MacFarlane got permission from Lucasfilm to spoof Star Wars, but the House of Mouse might not be as generous. During an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Seth MacFarlane spoke about his shock that Lucasfilm agreed to let him create the Family Guy episodes “Blue Harvest,” “Something, Something, Something, Dark Side,” and “It’s A Trap!”

“The first episode came about because we were doing so many Star Wars gags that finally Fox’s legal department said, ‘Hey, we got to start clearing this with Lucas or we’re gonna get sued.’ We got very depressed and thought, ‘Well, this is it.’ But to our surprise, Lucasfilm said something we never, ever hear: ‘OK, you can do it, just make sure the characters look exactly like they do in the movies.'”

George Lucas even paid Seth MacFarlane a huge compliment by inviting the Family Guy creator to screen “Blue Harvest” at his ranch. This is a very big deal when you know that Lucas hasn’t even bothered to watch a trailer for Star Wars: Episode VII that isn’t even two minutes long.

It would also be difficult for MacFarlane to do a Star Wars: The Force Awakens parody because Family Guy doesn’t have enough main characters for the spoof — Lois, Chris, Peter, and Cleveland would have to reprise their roles as Leia, Luke, Han, and R2-D2. Maybe MacFarlane could add American Dad! characters to the mix or something.
