Amal Clooney Not Pregnant, But Did George Ever Rule Out Kids?
“Amal Clooney is not pregnant,” read the statement George Clooney’s rep provided to E! News on Monday. The rumors and speculation that the former Amal Alamuddin might be looking to start a family with new husband George started almost as soon as they married in September. The most recent stories stem from a new shot of Amal Clooney with an open coat and what appears to be a noticeable bulge just where a baby might be. It was in response to this round of speculation that Clooney’s rep chose to set the record straight.
But even if the Clooneys are not yet expecting a baby, could there be a real baby bump on the horizon?
A quote from Clooney in 2006 didn’t rule out the idea. Before his wedding, People republished his statement, which seemed to stop short of putting the brakes on fatherhood.
“I think it’s the most responsible thing you can do, to have kids. I think it’s the biggest responsibility you’ll have, and it’s not something to be taken lightly. I don’t have that thing in me that says, ‘must do it.’ I don’t see myself ever having kids. But everything in my life has changed over periods of time… and the world does change.”
This concession that “the world does change” seems to leave the door open for kids. At the time of the eight-year-old quote, Clooney, who is now 53, would have been 45. Surprisingly, contrary to the persistent rumor that Clooney had completely sworn off marriage, he also told People in 2006 he had not ruled out that idea and that it, too, could change.
“Marriage? Who knows? I’ve been married. It’s not something I’m looking out for. Things could always change, but it’s not a consideration right now. The truth is I’m really happy. The things that are a drag in my life are so outweighed by the things that are great. I have families that I spend my days with, and friends I spend my days with, and people I care very much about. I get to do what almost no one gets to do. My life’s really good.”
In an Esquire article just this year, in January 2014, Clooney responded to the question as to why he is not married with kids. He implied the quote about him never wanting to marry was an old one.
“I haven’t had aspirations [to get married or have kids], ever. I was married in 1989. I wasn’t very good at it. I was quoted as saying I’ll never get married again pretty much right after I got divorced and then I’ve never talked about it since.”
The Esquire article, coincidentally, referred to tabloid rumors that Clooney was dating any number of women, including “a Croatian model, a British lawyer and – perhaps most spuriously – Katie Holmes, ex-wife of Tom Cruise.” As the public is now aware, less than a year later he did indeed marry a British lawyer.
