Jon Stewart Lives To Tell About Indictment In Eric Garner Case
Political pundit and Daily Show host Jon Stewart never makes anyone guess what he is thinking. If the guy ran for president, he just might be the one to win the “Golden Horseshoe” and run the country and other parts of the world from his celebrated TV show. If nothing else, most of us would either die laughing or wish we would. Stewart sort of brings Mad Magazine’s absurdia to life while making intolerable situations seem more tolerable.
Americans have an ironic ability to detach when a situation is too painful; we find a way to laugh about it to keep our sanity in check. Ask Jon Stewart. The funny man burns between love ’em and leave ’em politics, while spewing out ironic twists about the way things come out in the wash.
According to the Washington Post, and possibly for the first time in his life, Jon Stewart opened his show Thursday by discussing the grand jury decision in the Eric Garner case and admitting, “I honestly don’t know what to say. If comedy is tragedy plus time, I need more (expletive) time.”
CNN reports that Jon Stewart did, however, have plenty to say about Kentucky Senator Paul Rand blaming New York City’s high cigarette taxes for the choke hold death of Eric Garner in July.

New York Police Officer Daniel Pantaleo killed Garner during an attempted arrest for selling tax-free cigarettes. Several other officers took Garner to the ground to subdue him while Garner called out “I can’t breath” at least 11 times during the incident. Eric Garner was married and had six children.
The Inquisitr reports that on the heels of the Michael Brown killing in Ferguson, Missouri, a grand jury delivered a decision last week of no indictment for Officer Darren Wilson, who has since resigned from the force.
Thousands of Americans have taken to the streets in major cities from coast to coast in protest of no indictments for police officers in the Michael Brown and Eric Garner cases.
The idea of police officers wearing cameras that are turned on for every encounter might at least improve the atmosphere in our torn country. But Stewart jabs that having police officers wear cameras might not do much good, since we had footage of the incident in the Garner case and no charges were brought.
The Daily Show was off air the week the report of no indictment for Officer Wilson hit the news. Jon Stewart will let it stew, and we’ll hear from him in good time.
Jon Stewart sitting in silence is probably not a good thing. When he decides to cut loose and tell us what he really thinks, there might be a lot of bleeps during the program, or maybe not.
