The Walking Dead is one of the most followed TV shows at this time. It dominates ratings and has attracted a huge, and loyal, fandom. People around the world look forward to seeing what Rick, Daryl and all the other characters are going to do next.
With that in mind, it’s not difficult to imagine why AMC has decided to give The Walking Dead a spinoff/companion show.
According to Business Insider , the companion show is currently operating under the working title: The Walking Dead Companion Series: Cobalt . Whether or not the title will last remains to be seen.
The pilot is being created by Robert Kirkman and Dave Erickson. They will be executive producing along with Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert. Hurd and Alpert are also executive producers for the original Walking Dead series.
Rumor has it that the companion series will follow the character Sean Cabrera, a teacher trying to do right by everyone in his life, Nancy Tomkins, a guidance counselor, and her two kids.
Tomkins’ children have already been cast in the Walking Dead’s spinoff.
Nick is going to be played by Frank Dillane ( Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince ). His character is that of a teenager struggling with a drug problem. On the other hand, Nancy’s daughter Ashley is supposed to be an ambitious girl played by Alycia Debnam Carey ( Into the Storm ).
The part of Sean Cabrera was just recently cast out to Cliff Curtis ( Trauma ) as well, but the role of Nancy Tomkins is still in the works. According to The Hollywood Reporter , Anna Torv ( Fringe ) auditioned for the role at one point, but is no longer in the running for a part in The Walking Dead ‘s spinoff series.
The Walking Dead Companion Series: Cobalt is set to take place in the same world as the original Walking Dead series. The characters will be dealing with the same zombie apocalypse, but will be located somewhere away from the characters we’ve all grown familiar with.
There is a possibility that the story may also take place on a slightly different timeline, beginning just before the apocalypse. If it does, viewers will get to see the exact circumstances that ended the world as Rick Grimes knew it while he was in a coma.
As of right now, The Walking Dead Companion Series: Cobalt has only been given a pilot, but there is little doubt that it will be picked up once the pilot airs. It will hit AMC in 2015.
